In a decisive move to promote regular and legal emigration, the Cross River State Diaspora Commission (CRIDCOM), led by its Chairman, Hon. Otu Okor, conducted a strategic courtesy visit to the Comptroller of Immigration Service, Cross River State Command, Mrs. PC Ogbodo.
The visit underscored a mutual commitment to fostering a robust working partnership that safeguards citizens and reduces the risks associated with irregular migration. Hon. Okor emphasized the critical need for public education on proper avenues for international travel. “Our collaboration will significantly enhance awareness regarding the correct and legal channels for Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad,” he stated.
Comptroller Ogbodo warmly welcomed the CRIDCOM delegation, highlighting the immense importance of addressing migration issues proactively at the grassroots level. She affirmed that the Immigration Service is fully equipped with advanced automated systems and interconnected equipment, including links to INTERPOL, enabling effective identification of smugglers and traffickers. “By addressing these challenges from the grassroots, we can achieve a more profound and lasting impact than by merely reacting to issues at a later stage. It is crucial to educate potential migrants on the necessity and benefits of utilizing legal channels for travel,” Comptroller Ogbodo added.
Reinforcing this crucial message, Mrs. Emily Madueke, CRIDCOM Commissioner, stressed the imperative for Nigerians to be thoroughly educated on securing appropriate travel documents to prevent unnecessary national embarrassment. “If you must travel, then travel right,” she reiterated.
CRIDCOM pledged its full support for this joint initiative through sustained community-based advocacy programs, specifically aimed at reducing the vulnerability of individuals to human trafficking and exploitation.
This proactive partnership between CRIDCOM and the Nigeria Immigration Service is poised to have a significant positive impact on promoting safe, regular migration and substantially mitigating the dangers inherent in irregular emigration across Cross River State.
